Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is the Disability Tax Credit?

The Disability Tax Credit is a qualification used by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) to determine eligibility for certain tax credits and benefits. HandyTax helps disabled Canadians apply for these tax credit and benefits. Call us at 1-888-343-1155 to discuss your case.

Do I qualify for the Disability Tax Credit?

In order to qualify for the Disability Tax Credit, the impairment must ‘markedly restrict’ an individual in one or more of the following daily life functions or activities:
  • speaking
  • hearing
  • walking
  • elimination (bowel or bladder functions)
  • feeding
  • dressing
  • performing the mental functions necessary for everyday life
Also, if you or a loved one meets one of the following conditions you may qualify:
  • He or she is blind. (Visual acuity in both eyes is 20/200 (6/60) or less with the Snellen Chart (or an equivalent)).
  • He or she needs, and must dedicate a certain amount of time specifically for, life-sustaining therapy to support a vital function.
Check out our list of qualifying conditions.

How long does the process take?

The process generally takes around 6 months, but may take longer if we have to wait to receive the necessary forms back from you or your doctor. Canada Revenue Agency may also lengthen the process because they require more information from your doctor or other reasons.

Do I need to wait until personal tax season?

No, helping Canadians receive retroactive tax refunds for their disabilities can be done at any time of the year.

Will this affect my provincial disability (e.g. AISH, ODSP)?

No, your provincial disability payments will not be affected at all. The Disability Tax Credit aims to help you get back taxes you have paid over the past 10 years, while provincial disability programs aim to help disabled Canadians with low incomes meet basic financial requirements.
